What are your initial thoughts about the concept of Literacy with ICT (LwICT)?
My initial thoughts about the concept of LwICT is that it is a necessary and logical progression with the advancement of technology and its ever increasing usage in society. I think it addresses the issue that students are currently receiving varied levels of exposure to ICT within their education that is dependent of a variety of factors. I also feel that due to the exponential growth in technology, the LwICT framework requires (or forces) teachers and the educational system to 'keep up' in order to decrease the effects of the digital divide.
What implementation barriers for LwICT do you foresee at Senior Years?
Time and professional development are the largest barriers that I foresee. In my opinion, the use of technology in the classroom has a direct relation to their comfort level with technology.
What opportunities does LwICT present for Senior Years?
I think the opportunities LwICT presents for SYs are endless as it enhances education greatly when used effectively.
What professional learning is required initially to prepare Senior Years teachers to begin to use the LwICT continuum?
University students are currently required to take an Information Technology course to attain their degree. I think teachers need learning opportunities - either independently, co-operatively or in a mentorship environment. Due to current varied levels of Literacy with ICT within any given school staff, I think professional learning would be different for everyone. As an example, when assessment became a major focus for our school and division, everyone started at the beginning or at the same starting point. I think professional learning to use LwICT would need a more individualized or group approach.
What types of ICT do you currently have in your Senior Years classroom?
Computers, scanners, digital cameras, video cameras, an ICA (internet classroom assistant - it is similar to a wiki, but I think I like this better), various software (web design, animation, 3D modeling, MS office, Adobe, Apple iLife). I would like to start using a Smartboard but there is currently only one in our school.
What types of ICT are available to you in your school, but not in your classroom?
Smartboard. Everything else I try to get a hold of!
What subjects and grades do you teach and how do you currently use ICT to enhance student learning?
Grades 10-12, Retailing, Visions and Ventures (Entrepreneurship), Web Design, 2D Animation, Interactive Websites, Interactive Media, Broadcast Media.
